Tony Houpt

Tony has been fly fishing for over 30 years and has fished extensively in North America and around New Zealand. He spends a lot of his time fishing on the local waters around Wellington, Wairarapa and also in the Taupo region.

Most of his focus has been on fly fishing for trophy trout and salmon however over the last 5 years he has become involved in the competitive scene.

He entered his first competition in 2006 where he won the National Pairs Championship and qualified for the individual Nationals.

At that competition he qualified to represent NZ at the Commonwealth Championships where the team won a bronze medal. He won the National Pairs Championship again in 2007.

In 2009 he was a member of the NZ team that won a gold medal at the Oceania Fly Fishing Championships. He also represented NZ at the World Fly Fishing Championships in Poland in 2010. In that same year he won the Wellington, Taupo and Rotorua regional competitions and qualified for the 2012 team to compete at the World Championships in Slovenia.

He owes much of his success to other competitors, who have greatly assisted him in adapting his skills from recreational to competitive fly fishing.

Tony lives in Wellington, is married to Tanya and together they have 3 children.
